Gary´s blog: Visiting Costa Rica

After Midnight

Crossed the border into Costa Rica yesterday.  Took two hours standing in line, due to coffee pickers crossing to work…
Had to take a taxi to the next town, to catch my bus in time for the low lands..  took about ten hours to go 100km. The Costa Rica bus system is much  slower than Panama’s…

The bus got stopped for 40 minutes at a check point a half hour from my farm in CR.  They took a woman off the bus for having 8 bottles of liquor from Panama…  Things are twice as expensive in Costa Rica, import duty, and now they are searching vehicles for food etc. bought in Panama…  Food in CR, and everything else, is more expensive than in the US…
Also talked to a local in Sabalito near San Vito.  He told me that he left Zancudo near Pavones beach because the government had raised property taxes so much that all the gringos had left…Pavones is a world famous surfing beach, now a ghost town due to CR governments latest attempt to screw foreigners…He also said the government is bulldozing beautiful houses of people who don´t pay the property taxes…and that there is no tourism there now…

Basically the CR government is a failed state, the economy being trashed by their rip-off foreign nationals attitude…  And the local people I  talk to bitterly explain that they are being bled to death by bureaucracy and taxes…

Today a guy on the bus said it´s because they copy everything in the US.  Traffic tickets are about the same rate as in the US in an economy where the people make five to ten times less per hour…I guess they think it´s being progressive…

We are talking about a country that`s the size of Harney County Oregon…  Its government thinks it´s a world player…  Their major industry is tourism, and they trash it constantly…  Now they are charging tourists an exit tax even if leaving by bus… Thanks for coming! Can we milk you some more on the way out?

This is why Americans are leaving in droves, even long term residents… It used to be the number one country on the planet for American retirees.  Now not even honorable mention…

Even Nicaragua has pulled out ahead of Costa Rica on standard of living for its people, and as a place for retirees etc..

The only poorer country we saw was Honduras, where people patch the potholes in paved roads with dirt from donations from truckers…

I’ve actually had Ticos in CR tell me they wish the US Army would invade, and take out their government…

And I have to tell them the US government is just as bad or worse…. People being taxed to death, but there they aren’t smart enough to figure out what´s being done to them…

There´s a Taoist saying:

“Why is their poverty? Because the functionaries eat up all the money in taxes.”

So basically the more government you have, the more poverty…

“Man’s way is to take from those who have too little, and give to those who already have too much.”

Another Tao saying:

It ain’t about political parties folks… its about too much government for the people to support…

If you want to improve the economy, start removing government on all levels…  Anybody who blames a political party lacks understanding of the big picture.
